The price hike will have minimal impact on silicon wafer makers who have signed long-term agreements with suppliers of the material.

Silicon wafer makers all pointed out that the prices agreed on the supply contracts will prevail until year end when the contracts shall be renewed.

Price hikes could prompt silicon wafer vendors to raise prices for different wafer sizes to share part of the cost increase with metal dealers.

China suppliers of polysilicon for solar cells have steeply adjusted their prices to U.S.$30 a kg from less than U.S.$10 of early 2021 despite low material purity compared to silicon wafer applications.

Hoarding of polysilicon stock has been blamed for the steep price increases.
