Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is on track to increase its users by over seven times the current level of active customers, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said Tuesday.

Musk on Tuesday told the Mobile World Congress that SpaceX’s satellite internet network is on its way to possibly 500,000 in the next 12 months. SpaceX in May said Starlink orders and deposits have already breached the half-a-million mark.
Starlink users this month passed what Musk described as the “strategically notable” number of 69,420 active users. The user base was at 10,000 in February. The network currently has over 1,500 satellite orbits.
Musk said the company is developing a less expensive new generation terminal with the same capability, as it is losing money on satellite antennas that are offered at $499 each but actually cost $1,300 each.
SpaceX is working to improve speeds and expects to get latency down under 20 milliseconds, similar to ground-based fiber and 5G.
