U.S. employers hired 6.5 million people in January while reporting 11.3 job vacancies that month as the Omicron variant gathered pace in most parts of the country.

The number of Americans who quit their jobs dropped slightly to 4.3 million in January, falling by 151,000 compared to a record-high figure in December.
Quits in the finance and insurance sectors increased by 30,000, signalling that white-collar workers were looking for new opportunities as many offices move ahead with plans to reopen.
Hires and total separations remained virtually unchanged at 6.5 million and 6.1 million, respectively.
Job openings continue to surpass available employees. A situation that has forced companies to continue raising wages and offering new perks to attract and retain employees.
