Housing starts climbed to a nine-month high in December, in line with the growth of building permits during the period.

Housing starts for the month stood at 1.702 million, up 1.4% from the 1,678 million in November and 2.5% higher than the 1.661 million in December 2020. This is the highest level in nine months since March’s 1.725 million.
Building permits issued during the month climbed to 1.873 million, up 9.1% from November’s 1.717 million and 6.5% above the 1.758 million recorded the same month in the previous year.
Completions for December stood at 1.295 million, 8.7% lower than the 1.418 million recorded in November and 6.6% below the 1.386 million in December 2020. This follows two straight months of growth.
The Census Bureau is set to publish monthly local and country data on new housing permits in the next data to be released.
