The S&P Global Eurozone Construction Total Activity Index stood at 49.2 in May, down from 50.4 in April and below the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction.
The latest contraction was the steepest decline in 15 months, on the back of higher raw material prices and supply-chain disruptions, which hit output and demand during the month.
Home building slipped for the first time since February 2021, while commercial building activity contracted at the fastest rate since April 2021. Civil engineering works contracted for the second straight month.
Purchasing activity increased for the 15th straight month but fell from April to hit the weakest expansion since March 2021. The staffing level also fell below the 50.0 no-change mark.
