The highly anticipated U.S. Open semifinal match between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova took an unexpected turn on Thursday night. As the players entered the second set, the Arthur Ashe Stadium was disrupted by climate activists, causing a delay in the game.
At the time of the interruption, Gauff had a strong lead of 6-4, 1-0. However, play was forced to come to a halt for a minimum of 25 minutes. Tournament referee Jake Garner appeared on the court, while security swiftly made their way towards the protesting individuals. These activists were boldly sporting shirts with a clear message: “End Fossil Fuels.” To make matters more challenging for security, one of the protesters had glued their shoes to the ground, making it harder for them to be removed.
During the delay, Gauff patiently sat on her sideline bench and enjoyed some fruit from a plastic container. Keeping her spirit high, she then grabbed a few tennis balls and practiced her serves while Muchova received a visit from a trainer.
As time passed, with no immediate solution in sight, both players eventually decided to head towards the locker room.
