Norwegian Air Shuttle reported an increase in passenger numbers for the month of August, despite facing difficult conditions including high winds and floods caused by a storm in Norway, as well as an outage at National Air Traffic Services in the UK.
In August, the airline carried a total of 2.14 million passengers, slightly lower than the 2.31 million passengers in July but showing a significant increase of 7.3% compared to the 2 million passengers carried in August 2022.
While overall capacity experienced an 18% growth compared to the previous year, traffic increased by 17% during the same period.
The airline’s Chief Executive, Geir Karlsen, acknowledged the impact of recent unforeseen events on their operations, such as the storm named ‘Hans’ in Scandinavia and air traffic control issues in the UK. However, he expressed optimism as autumn approached, noting that many travelers are still going on holiday and that business travel is making a comeback after the summer season. Furthermore, the airline’s autumn sales campaign has received positive feedback, with encouraging booking momentum for the upcoming months.
To prepare for the seasonal variation in demand during the winter season, Norwegian has adjusted its capacity accordingly. Additionally, the airline expressed concerns over potential increases in airport fees in Norway and its potential negative impact on customers.
