Fuel retailers in Montana can now offer E15 at their terminals, following regulatory changes that went into effect on Jan. 1. The Montana Administrative Register recently announced that the state has become the 49th to permit the blend.
The decision comes as a result of the Montana Department of Labor & Industry’s Business Standards Division updating state regulations at the start of the year. These changes align with the latest edition of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) handbook, which governs fuel quality. Previously, Montana’s regulations were based on a 2012 edition of the NIST handbook that did not allow for E15 sales.
However, it’s important to note that California and certain counties in Arizona still do not permit the sale of this higher ethanol blend.
In a recent news release, Emily Skor, CEO of Growth Energy, expressed her excitement about this development. She stated, “This is great news for Montana drivers who will soon have access to a lower-cost fuel option at the pump. By simply updating its fuel regulations, Montana has become the 49th state to give consumers the chance to save money with E15 while using more renewable fuel made in America and increasing our energy independence.”
Montana joins Nevada and Oregon as the most recent states to permit access to E15. Nevada and Oregon made this move in June and December 2021, respectively.
