Lufthansa Expects Flight Chaos Amid Strikes
Deutsche Lufthansa anticipates that strikes occurring this week in Germany will severely impact its flight schedule. The German airline group stated that approximately 80% to 90% of its planned 1,000 daily flights will be canceled, potentially leading to delays. This disruption is expected to affect over 200,000 passengers.
Reasons Behind the Strikes
The strikes were initiated after failed negotiations regarding wage disputes between Lufthansa and the German trade union Verdi. The strike action involves ground staff at Lufthansa, including employees at subsidiaries such as Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo. The walkout is scheduled to occur from March 7 to March 9, with varying times for nonpassenger areas.
Union Demands and Lufthansa’s Offer
Verdi is demanding a 12.5% salary increase or a minimum of an extra 500 euros ($542.77) per month for employees, along with an inflation compensation bonus of EUR3,000. In contrast, Lufthansa has proposed a 10% pay raise over the next 28 months. Despite the ongoing negotiations and strike actions, the airline has not put forth an improved offer.
Seeking Resolution Amidst Escalation
According to Michael Niggemann, chief human resources officer of Deutsche Lufthansa, it seems that Verdi is more inclined towards escalating tensions rather than reaching a resolution. He mentioned that the company is open to negotiating promptly without preconditions if Verdi agrees to suspend further strikes and engage in constructive discussions.
Future Negotiations
The fifth round of negotiations is scheduled for March 13 and March 14, as confirmed by the union. Both parties will likely continue their talks in an attempt to resolve the ongoing wage dispute.
