Angie Winkler, a dedicated caregiver for her husband, recently retired from her financial-services job. With some extra time on her hands, Winkler embarked on a search for a meaningful activity. It wasn’t long before she discovered the world of knitting for others.
Moreover, this wasn’t Winkler’s first venture into such meaningful work. She had previously undertaken a similar project, completing a blanket for a friend who had lost her mother.
“The impact it had on her was truly remarkable. Knitting may have come naturally to me, but it meant the world to her. It made every moment worth it,” Winkler shares.
Since then, Winkler has successfully wrapped up two Loose Ends projects. One of them involved finishing a sweater that had been started by a woman’s stepmother.
“While the sweater only needed a little touch, receiving a photo of her wrapped up in it after completion meant so much to me. I consider myself fortunate to be able to provide that sense of warmth and comfort,” says Winkler.
Although many Loose Ends projects are handled through the mail, Winkler had the opportunity to personally deliver a completed blanket for her second project.
In conclusion, Winkler’s passion for knitting has found a new purpose in the form of volunteer work. Her dedication to bringing comfort and solace to those in need through completed projects is truly inspiring.
Loose Ends: A Global Community of Crafters
Loose Ends, a remarkable initiative, was established in August 2022 by Jennifer Simonic and Masey Kaplan, both passionate and skilled knitters in their early fifties. What began as a simple idea has now blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon, engaging over 15,000 crafters from 56 countries. These dedicated volunteers devote their time and talent to completing unfinished projects started by individuals who have passed away.
The true essence of Loose Ends lies in the act of asking for assistance, which stems from the depths of grief. Simonic explains, “We often find ourselves knitting in public, and it has become common for people to approach us, pleading for our help to finish a project. Each request is made with a heart filled with a myriad of emotions.”
The range of craft projects that fall under the umbrella of Loose Ends is vast, encompassing various art forms such as knitting, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, needlepoint, and other fiber arts. Kaplan enthusiastically states, “Our vision is for Loose Ends to expand its reach to non-English-speaking countries and become a worldwide movement that welcomes diverse skills. Imagine the vast array of talents we could gather to fulfill an even greater number of requests.”
In these uncertain times, where many have found themselves isolated from their communities and friends, people yearn for a sense of purpose and meaning. Simonic highlights this longing, remarking, “We have spent three years in the midst of a pandemic, feeling alone. So many individuals tell us that they want to engage in something meaningful.” Tragically, a significant portion of the projects left unfinished were initiated by individuals who tragically lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, it is worth noting that Loose Ends does not limit its mission to COVID-related projects alone. In fact, there are also projects left behind by individuals who have passed away by suicide, as a result of car accidents, or due to sudden and unexpected illnesses. Simonic reflects on the unexpected emotional value that this endeavor brings, stating, “We were pleasantly surprised by how profoundly rewarding this project turned out to be. There is an undeniable spirit of generosity and care surrounding each undertaking.”
