The European Commission recently announced its intent to conduct a thorough investigation into Amazon.com’s proposed acquisition of iRobot. The deal, worth $1.7 billion, has raised concerns regarding competition in the market for robot vacuum cleaners. Additionally, the European Union’s executive arm believes that the acquisition will further strengthen Amazon’s position as an online marketplace provider.
The European Commission has until November 15 to make a decision on whether to approve the deal or not. Amazon has expressed its commitment to working closely with the EC throughout the process and addressing any questions or concerns that may arise.
In response to the investigation, an Amazon spokesperson stated, “iRobot offers practical and inventive products, facing intense competition from other vacuum cleaner suppliers. We believe that Amazon can provide the necessary resources to accelerate innovation, invest in critical features, and ultimately, lower prices for consumers.”
Amazon initially announced its plans to acquire iRobot in August of last year. Both companies are focused on ensuring a successful outcome from these regulatory reviews.
