Underwhelming Debut for Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham
LOS ANGELES — The fourth installment of the action-packed franchise, “Expend4bles,” fell short at the box office this weekend, according to data firm Comscore. Despite featuring popular names like Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and Megan Fox, the Lionsgate and Millennium film only managed to earn $8.3 million. This disappointing opening marks the lowest for the series, which saw its previous film rake in $15.8 million on its debut and go on to gross over $214 million worldwide.
“The Nun 2” Reigns Supreme for Third Week
In a surprising turn of events, horror film “The Nun 2” claimed the top spot at the box office for the third consecutive week. The Warner Bros. spinoff from the successful “Conjuring” franchise collected a solid $8.4 million in its first week and has now amassed over $69 million in total earnings. Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst, attributes the film’s success to the enduring appeal of horror movies: “It just seems no matter what if you’re scared in the movie theater a couple times in an hour and a half or two, that’s worth the price of admission.”
New Entries and Standings
“A Haunting in Venice” secured the third position, bringing in $6.3 million. This marks Kenneth Branagh’s third adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel, following the successes of “Murder on the Orient Express” in 2017 and “Death on the Nile” in 2022. After two weeks, it has accumulated an impressive total of $25.3 million.
Meanwhile, Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 3” held steady at fourth place, adding $4.725 million to its domestic gross of $81.1 million over four weeks.
Rounding out the top five is the critically acclaimed “Barbie,” which continues to carry momentum from the summer season into the fall. The Greta Gerwig-directed film earned $3.2 million this week, bringing its domestic total to an impressive $630 million after a successful 10-week run.
Despite the disappointing performance of “Expend4bles 4,” the box office landscape remains dynamic with a mix of horror, mysteries, and iconic characters capturing the attention of audiences.
Box Office Weekend Report
The box office results from this past weekend were lackluster as Hollywood projects continue to be impacted by strikes. However, industry experts are optimistic that a “spectacular October” is on the horizon with several highly anticipated releases.
Top Performers
Leading the pack in the box office was “The Nun II,” raking in an impressive $8.4 million. Following closely behind was “Expend4bles” with $8.3 million, and “A Haunting in Venice” with $6.3 million. “The Equalizer 3” secured the fourth position, earning $4.7 million, while “Barbie” claimed the fifth spot with $3.2 million.
Remaining Rankings
Other notable films in the rankings include “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” taking sixth place with $3 million, and “It Lives Inside” making its debut with a solid $2.6 million. The drama film “Dumb Money,” based on the GameStop stock frenzy, held steady in eighth place for the second consecutive week, amassing $2.5 million.
Slipping down to ninth place was “Blue Beetle” with $1.8 million in ticket sales, and the list concluded with “Oppenheimer” in the tenth slot, earning $1.6 million. Notably, Christopher Nolan’s film has achieved an impressive domestic total of $321 million.
Slow Output and Anticipated Releases
These figures mark another underwhelming weekend at the box office, especially since it’s the first time since February that no movie has exceeded $10 million in earnings. However, experts predict a turnaround in the weeks to come. Industry analyst Dergarabedian believes that a “spectacular October” is imminent with the release of highly anticipated films such as “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film, “The Exorcist: Believer,” and “Saw X.”
Dergarabedian emphasized that this is merely a temporary lull in the box office and expects a return to normalcy once the new releases hit theaters.
These figures are estimates of ticket sales from Friday through Sunday in both the United States and Canada. The final domestic figures will be released on Monday.
